Outcomes based on quantitative data must become a normal quality-of-care measure in the behavioral health industry. This is
especially important as consumers need better access to quality information to make healthcare decisions.
Q "Therapy in America 2004," a consumer survey co-sponsored by Psychology Today, showed that one in four Americans had received mental health treatment in the previous two years, yet there were one in
three Americans needing treatment who weren't getting it. What can be done to get treatment to those who need it?
A Individuals often are uncertain about where to seek help. Behavioral-health companies need to simplify the process of determining
an individual's needs and how best to deliver care. Doing so increases the likelihood they will receive the right type of
care in the right setting at the right time. This leads to better outcomes for the individual and improved affordability for
healthcare purchasers. We support assessing an individual's needs in psychosocial and medical spheres and directing people
to the channel of care that is most likely to work best for them, whether through traditional, telephonic or on-line channels.
Q Are employers missing a key component to keeping their employees healthy in an affordable manner?
A Behavior change can have a profound effect on affordability. Human behavior drives an estimated 50% to 80% of healthcare costs.
Our role is to help address the behaviors that lead to poor behavioral health and medical outcomes. For example, smoking,
drinking, overeating and lack of exercise are behaviors that lead to medical problems. These behaviors drive much of the healthcare
spend for employers. When we address the root cause behind these behaviors, we can truly make a difference in health outcomes.
Q How can the behavioral health industry do a better job of bringing this component to the workforce?
A The industry needs to move beyond just helping those who seek out behavioral and lifestyle changes. We need to integrate,
coordinate and train vendors to help identify those who might need behavioral health treatment. We do this through LifeSolutions,
a medical and behavioral integration program that identifies individuals with medical conditions and co-morbid stress, depression
and/or anxiety.
